The Last Invasion

Chapter Ten

“Do it again Bruno.”

“What combination should I try this time?”

“Just a second, let me check my notes. The nearest button obviously must be pressed first before any of the four others. We’re calling that button ‘one.’ We assume that the power of the weapon is determined by whichever button you press after first pressing ‘one’ to put it in setting mode. Okay, we just did ‘one’ and ‘two’..."

“Jesus, Bill, when I fired that blast it drilled a hole right through the cave wall. I don’t know how far it drilled. Hell, it might even have gone clear through the damn mountain for all I know. If that’s a weaker power setting, I can’t imagine what button one and button five would produce. It’s damn scary. We’re very likely to blow ourselves up in this tight area.”

“What do you think, John?”

“Well, Bill, I think we have something here that we’d better be damn careful of. That’s my professional opinion. All I can say is try the combination of button ‘one’ and button ‘three’ next, but be ready to get out of this cave fast if the damn thing starts collapsing in on us.”

“Oh fuck, if you three guys are afraid, you can go through the tunnel to the other chamber and be ready to climb like hell out the hole. Hell, I’ll try it. What the hell, I might as well die here as get disintegrated today by the gooks. Its all for freedom.”

“Sam, just hold on. Hold your horses. Let’s stop a minute and consider things. Okay, so far we think that button number ‘one’ is a kind of release mechanism so that the weapon can be adjusted to different power settings. But, in order to turn the weapon on in the first place, buttons ‘one,’ ‘two,’ ‘three’ and ‘four’ must be pressed simultaneously. The Chinese Red soldier using this beam rifle just presses all of them down with the fingers of his right hand and then it is ready to either fire, on whatever setting is already programmed from the last usage, or, change its power setting. And, we think the other four buttons must increase the power incrementally as we move toward number ‘five’ when they are pressed one at a time--but--this must be done after pressing button ‘one’ to get into power-setting mode. Is that right?”

“Yeah Bill... as far as we know that’s right.”

“Okay. Now John, can you think of anything else?”

“Well... I would say that it is likely that various combinations of the power-setting buttons produce different effects. For example when they want to blowup conventional ammunition. That would be a specific frequency and might not produce any other destructive effects at all. It doesn’t need to. There might even be a stun setting.”

“Yeah... Star trek. I’ll bet those gooks watch TV too. They have satellite TV in China.”

“Different effects does seem like a strong possibility, John. Let’s take a chance. Bruno, I want you to try it again but this time press ‘one,’ then press ‘three,’ then press ‘two.’"

“Okay, done... here goes.”

A ray went out in a flash of light but there was no hole left in the cave wall. John felt the spot where it had hit. “It only feels slightly warm.”

“Hey guys, I think we may have found the lowest power setting.”

“See? What’d I tell you? Those gooks watch Star trek.”

“Maybe they do, Sam, maybe they do. Okay, now we’re making some quick progress.”

“It’s very reasonable and scientific. It’s really amazing what nanotechology can do. The micro-circuitry in this piece doesn’t just tap the sub-quantum kinetic field but selects and adjusts the output frequency in a way that is astounding. With this kind of technology they could power a whole city with a chip no bigger than your hand. You know, I think we’ve basically figured this thing out.”

“Sure we have. Those damn gooks are smart as hell. Hey, I wonder what would happen if you pressed ‘one’ and then ‘two’ and ‘four’ at the same time?”

“Okay, Bruno, try it.”

“Okay, get ready. You might want to stand back just in case.”

When Bruno pulled the trigger what came out of the barrel was not the same ray as before. It looked much like a crackling bolt of lightening.

“Wow! KTAK. Them gooks can electrocute you with this gun!”

John saw the target smoking so he didn’t put his hand on it right away. After it cooled down a little, he examined it. “Yes. It’s pitted. Indeed that was a very powerful bolt of electricity.”

“Okay guys. We have managed to find out about this thing without vaporizing ourselves. I do not want to take a chance on turning it up to a high setting. We know enough about the weapon now to do the job.”

“We’ve probably only seen them use one setting of the disintegration ray, so they must keep that as a general setting. Which one do you suppose that one is?”

“Well, John, it probably is higher than what we just did. Maybe button ‘one’ and ‘three’ but in this confined space, we probably shouldn’t test that if we want to preserve our lives for something useful. Setting it by pressing ‘one’ and ‘two’ seemed more similar to what a powerful steady stream of super-powerful bullets would be. You know, I wonder if it really did go all the way through the mountain. You know, we’d better check on that. Sam, would you take a light and climb up and see if you can find an exit hole? You’ll have to search quite a bit but it would be worth it to know.”

“Sure. I tell you what. Let me take a compass bearing on it down here so I can get in the ball-park on the other side of the hill.”

“That’s good thinking Sam. Hell, maybe you should become a physicist.”

“Nope, I won’t live that long. I just wanna kill me some gooks today. That’s all I care about.”

“Bruno, go up top with Sam and keep an eye out. It’s better if two of you are topside to watch each other’s back. John and I will talk a bit while you guys are gone.”

“Okay.”

Sam finished taking his compass readings and measurements. He put a broom handle into the hole to get the exact angle.”

“I hope we don’t have to go too far to find the other slope of the hill but I think after taking these measurements it might not be too hard to find that exit hole, if there is one. Man, that would be something. This is one hell of a weapon. I coulda used one of these in Iraq. Okay Bruno, I think I’ve got it. Let’s go.”

John picked up the weapon and examined it again. “This is really something else, Bill, I am really not happy with having to guess what those higher settings will do. What do you think? ‘One’ and ‘four?’ ‘One’ and ‘five?’”

“From what we now think we know, ‘one’ and ‘five’ would be the most powerful setting. That’s the one we should use.”

“I really wish we could test it somehow. The ray seems to stay on as long as the trigger is pulled but the electrical zap is like a single shot. Man, I wish we could familiarize ourselves with this weapon a bit more.”

”We can’t. And we have no place to test it except this cave. We’ll just put it on the highest setting and pray for the best. I don’t even know if that is powerful enough. And, there is always the possibility that the craft will have some kind of protective countermeasures. Maybe EM shielding or some kind of force-field surrounding it. I don’t know. But, even if they do have shielding they have to turn if off sometime.”

“You mean while people are going in and out of it on the tour?”

“I don’t want to kill a bunch of our neighbors but do you know what? It would be worth it to put even a tiny chink in the Armour of these bastards.”

“Do you really feel that way?”

“Are you kidding? I sure as hell do.”

“Well... maybe your right. Desperate times call for desperate action and without that nothing ever changes.”

“And these are desperate times... even apocalyptic times. We have to fight and we already know that all three of us are going to die today. I’m hoping you survive to help the resistance after I’m gone, if anything is left of it. But, when I stand before God today, he will say, ‘job well done.’”

“You’re sure of that?”

“Absolutely.”

“Well, since I do not believe there is a God, it doesn’t matter. I prefer complete blank annihilation anyway. One thing you can say about that... you’ll never know it.”

“Or, you might find yourself shoveling coal.”

“A myth, Bill, a myth.”

“You’d better hope so.”

“I have studied a few things, Bill.”

“Well, what do your studies tell you about what we are going to do today?”

“You are likely to be successful. If not in bringing down that craft or destroying it on the ground, you will likely be able to kill one or more Chinese and Sam will be happy. If you kill a whole bunch of them, we will all be happy. This weapon makes you a dangerous force.”

“Well, if we can kill a chink with one of those lower settings, we could get another weapon or maybe more. Then we could shoot up their barracks or, who knows what. The possibilities are endless until they get us.”

“You seem very determined to die. What about trying to kill a bunch of them and survive to do it again another day?”

“That’s very unlikely... but I admit that it is a possibility. If we could keep on giving them problems it would be good. I am hoping that when we die it will be spectacular and the fame of it will inspire others to do likewise. I would like to see some young guys, you know like in their twenties, really get tough having been inspired by today’s brazen attack. They need to stand up for America and our way of life and learn that our way of life is more than video games, rock bands and ice cream at McDonalds. Wow, they won’t have those things again for a long time.”

“Well, whatever happens, it will certainly effect us all. I just hope that the Red’s don’t decide to take massive reprisals on the innocent population because of this.”

“Oh, they will. You can be sure of that. These slant-eyed chinks only like to kill people, especially Americans. They are inhuman brutes at the core. Look what they have already done. They would think nothing of murdering and torturing people in revenge for the actions of three real Americans that stood up to them. Don’t think they will just let this go. They can’t. Their occupation depends upon keeping the population in fear and trembling at all times. Otherwise people would be rushing them, pulling those weapons out of their hands and blasting them every time they dared to get near. And, that is exactly what we need. Courage. Guts to be ready and willing to die for America and our way of life.”

“Just... what is our way of life?”

“Are you such an educated fool that you would ask me that? Our way of life is democracy and freedom. Freedom, my friend, is not free. It requires lots of blood sweat and tears as well as sacrifice. Continual sacrifice for our families and loved ones. I will give every drop of my blood to this. How about you?”

“Well... I am a coward and prefer any killing that I might do be done by pressing a button far away from the nitty gritty hand to hand.”

“Well, at least you admit it. They may need you for the final battle when they set off the thermonuclear holocaust.”

“Let’s hope not.”

“John, at least you are not adverse to killing your enemies like some of these peaceniks and hopped-up hippy love-dreamers. You do know what needs to be done. And even though you’re a coward, perhaps not a sniveling one.”

“Well... you haven’t seen me in action yet. In fact, I haven’t either.”

“Oh, you’ll be in action all right... and soon. Today these slant-eyes are going to go on high alert and be much more brutal than ever before. You’d better get some guts, leap on one of those Cadres and grab a disintegration weapon for yourself. At least you know how to use it now. Why not take a few of those bastards with you? Just hose ‘em down with that disintegration ray and watch ‘em smoke. Hell, if they get you with one of those, you’ll never feel a thing and just blank out forever. Me, I’m going to heaven to get my reward and I plan to invest it wisely believe me.”

“Ah, Bill, you’re such a red-neck fool and so brain-washed by your Bible thumpin’ background.”

“I’d rather be brain-washed by what my daddy and mama taught me than by some foreign slant-eyed Cadre.”

“Well, Bill, brain-washing is brain-washing. Either way it is mind-control with an agenda. I prefer intellectual and scientific pursuits. That’s what excites me.”

“You know something don’t you John? The intellectuals have always sucked the life right out of people’s resistance to tyranny. The intellectuals take over when the killin’ is done and then... twist things into yet another blood-sucking totalitarian empire. Intellectual though. How wonderful. No, John, you and I are two different species and in the long run, courage and fortitude will prevail because that’s just the way the universe operates. The strong win. The weak loose. Simple as that. It’s nature.”

“Without the intellectuals you would have no progress, just a continual prime-time wrestling match of dummies being manipulated by smart puppet-masters who know very well that it is not real, but keep their power by convincing the dummies that it is.”

“Don’t give me that horseshit. It’s real alright. You’ll know how real it is today when all this goes down. Oh yes you will.”

“Have you actually thought out a plan for today or are you just going to start blasting that craft and hope for the best?”

“I tell you what we going to do. We will wait till the craft lands and the tours start. Then Bruno will blast his way into the ship and start hosing down with the disintegration ray. That should finish that craft and everyone in it. He will start aiming at the ship from the very first, so it might explode before he actually gets inside. That doesn’t matter. I have no idea how much collateral damage there will be but there is no doubt that there will be some. While Bruno is doing that, Sam and I will jump some Cadres by surprise with our 45 pistols and grab a couple of additional beam weapons. Then... if we get that far... we will shop till we drop.”

They heard Sam and Bruno returning into the other chamber and could tell that they were excited.

“Hey, it did go all the way through the mountain. It did!”

“Let’s hope it didn’t accidentally kill somebody.”

“No, I don’t think so, it was going up at a slight angle so it just shot into the sky.”

“Okay fellow patriots, here is what we are going to do.”

Bill explained the full plan. He hadn’t thought it all the way through until just now. They liked the plan and again declared that they were ready and willing to sacrifice themselves for the cause. They now had killing on their minds and their hopes were simply to blast as many of the Chinese as possible. With killing on their minds, thinking about dying was less of a problem. They really wanted a blood-bath and considered any collateral damage to be right and unavoidable. The citizens not in the resistance had to make sacrifices too whether they liked it or not. The more casualties the better. They were really hoping to show the Chinese Reds that not everyone would just stand by and be stepped on like a bug. "The Cadres too might have to start making some sacrifices.

“Okay. Now I want to ask you to give some thoughtful feedback. Have we missed anything? Does anyone have some additional suggestions?”

“What’s still bothering me are the possible reprisals.”

“Unavoidable.”

“We won’t be around to worry about them.”

“Just because you three don’t have wives and family you should consider those who do.”

“I hate to be hard-core but practically speaking, my only consideration is to get this gook boot heel off my neck.”

“Do you think this will start that process?”

“Yes I do.”

“Oh yes it will start that process. The process of defeating these brutes forever. It will inspire others to do the same thing and even more. It is the rallying event that we need. It is the catalyst to get real resistance off the ground. It is Americans standing up and showing what they are really made of. It is the citizens right here in Riverview sending a message that they are infuriated and refuse to take this crap anymore.”

“There is another thing. Don’t you think if we simply wait a bit and case this situation out that it might be more successful?”

“You know you might be right but I have decided to go ahead now. I am psyched for it. I have no more patience. Six weeks of this is all I will take. Period.”

“Me too.” “I tell you I’m killin' me a gook today no matter what happens, but I sure want to see that craft go up in a fireball. I sure do.”

“Well, we saw Washington go up in a fireball, we saw New York go up in a fireball, we saw Los Angeles go up in a fireball and we saw several other American cities go up in a fireball. I am flooded with fireballs and I demand that at least one of them is the torch of Liberty.”

“It will be, by God.”

“Long live Liberty.”

“Just how do you think carrying on a conflict in which you are completely outgunned by super-technology is going to have anything whatsoever to do with Liberty?”

“It is the soul longing for freedom that is victorious.”

“You mean by suicidal martyrdom to satisfy revenge?”

“No, I mean for Almighty God’s righteousness and justice!”

“Look. You guys are re-acting instead of acting. Why not use the heads on your shoulders to put something more reasonable and effective together?”

“That’s intellectual horseshit!”

“Sure is.”

“We have put it together. Oh yes we have. We have put it together. And what it boils down to is this: we must kill as many of these bastards as we can as fast as we can. Bottom line.”

“To me it just sounds too much like a fanatical rush to suicide.”

“We are not Al Qaida. We are fed up Americans.”

“Now that sounds like something Al Quida might say. ‘we are fed-up Muslims.’”

“Damn rag heads. We never did anything to them.”

“Well, that’s... somewhat controversial.”

“Not to me it isn’t. We are completely justified in killing as many of America’s enemies as we can. Even Almighty God wants these fuckers dead! An invasion of this magnitude has never happened even once in the entire history of the world. These bastards just wantonly slaughtered Americans without conscience, no concern and no mercy. They must pay.”

“Yes. They must pay and by God they are going to start paying this very day. They had no idea how expensive this would be for them.”

“Well, gentlemen. I hope you have worked yourselves up into the proper state to do well. Good luck and if you believe in God, God bless you. If not, cheers. The whole country is probably on your side this day and no matter what happens, this will be a day not soon forgotten.”
